Our bodies are designed to communicate with us. Our cravings can be triggered by a number of things: vitamin deficiencies, mineral deficiencies, an imbalance of hormones (which is usually caused by an imbalance of vitamins/minerals), emotions, the body seeking a specific nutrient (I.e. craving chocolate due to a magnesium deficiency), and thirst.
Inflammation, skin reactions and indigestion are set off by foods and/or chemicals that our body is telling us to consume in moderation or to not eat at all.
Similarly, have you ever wondered why certain foods just "hit the spot"? What is it about those foods and how you were feeling at the time that was so incredibly satisfying?
It’s not simply food. When our eyes grow tired or we become forgetful under stress, our bodies are telling us to rest. When we feel lethargic, our bodies are asking us to get active. When we are experiencing anxiety or anger, our mind might be calling us to get quiet through prayer or meditation or this could be poor digestion and/or nutrient deficiencies.
Intuitive Health Holistic Nutrition believes that by following our intuition we can nourish our bodies, minds, and souls with healthy food, physical activity, education, prayer and meditation. In our opinion and experience, eating healthy does not mean consuming raw salads all of the time or exercising for hours everyday. Rather, it is what we do most of the time that matters.
Our bodies respond to an accumulation of how we treat them.
For instance, incorporating a variety of fruits like apples and bananas, vegetables like spinach and broccoli, whole grains like quinoa and brown rice, and lean proteins like chicken and fish into your diet, and engaging in activities like walking, swimming, or stretching can be beneficial. Eating a doughnut every so often will not do too much damage. Eating multiple doughnuts daily will not set anyone up for an optimal way of living. The key is moderation.
Not a fan of exercise? Don't lose hope. It's possible you just haven't found the right type for you yet. The joy of discovering an activity that gets your heart rate up and starts building your muscles is unparalleled. Keep an open mind and explore the possibilities, like walking on the beach with your friends, hiking with your dog, or playing soccer with your kids. The right exercise is out there waiting for you.
